What Are AI Overviews and AI Mode? Google's AI Search Features Explained

Published: 2026-03-225 min readv1.0

AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google Search features powered by the Gemini AI model. AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience / SGE) display AI-generated summary answers at the top of regular Google Search results. AI Mode is a separate conversational interface within Google Search that supports multi-turn dialogues with cited sources. Together, they represent Google's transformation of traditional search into AI-augmented search -- and they use different source selection criteria than organic search rankings.

Why It Matters

AI Overviews and AI Mode are the most significant change to Google Search in decades. They fundamentally alter how users interact with search results -- and which websites receive visibility and traffic.

Why these features matter for your business:

  • Massive exposure. AI Overviews appear at the top of Google Search results for a growing percentage of queries. Users see the AI summary before they see any organic links. If your site is not cited in the AI Overview, you may lose clicks even if you rank #1 organically.
  • Different source selection. 88% of pages cited by AI Mode are not in Google's top 10 organic results. This means traditional Google rankings do not predict AI Overview or AI Mode visibility. A completely different optimization approach is needed.
  • Click-through impact. AI Overviews can reduce click-through rates to organic results because users get their answer directly in the search page. However, being cited within an AI Overview can increase your clicks compared to organic listings alone, since the citation appears in a prominent, trusted position.
  • Conversational follow-ups. AI Mode supports multi-turn conversations. A user might start with a broad question and then ask two or three follow-up questions, each generating new citations. This creates multiple opportunities for your content to be discovered in a single session.
  • Google's largest user base. Google processes billions of searches daily. Even if AI features appear on only a fraction of queries, the absolute number of impressions is enormous compared to standalone AI platforms like ChatGPT or Perplexity.

Google launched AI Overviews (as SGE) in 2023 and has steadily expanded its availability. AI Mode was introduced as a more interactive, conversational search experience within Google.

How It Works

Both features draw from Google's search index but apply AI-driven source selection on top of it.

AI Overviews

  • Trigger. When Google determines that a query would benefit from an AI-generated summary, it displays an AI Overview at the top of the search results page.
  • Source selection. Gemini analyzes pages in Google's index that are relevant to the query and selects the most informative sources. It prioritizes content with clear, direct answers, structured data, and authoritative signals.
  • Summary generation. The AI synthesizes information from multiple sources into a concise summary, typically 2-5 paragraphs.
  • Citations. Source links appear alongside the summary, allowing users to click through to the original pages.

AI Mode

  • Activation. Users opt into AI Mode from the Google Search interface, entering a conversational search experience.
  • Multi-turn dialogue. Users can ask follow-up questions, and AI Mode maintains context across the conversation. Each turn may retrieve and cite different sources.
  • Deeper responses. AI Mode generates longer, more detailed answers than AI Overviews, with more source citations per response.
  • Source breadth. Because of follow-up queries, AI Mode tends to cite a wider range of sources across a conversation than a single AI Overview.

Source selection criteria

Both features share common preferences:

  • Structured data. Pages with FAQ Schema see 54% better content interpretation. JSON-LD markup for Organization, Article, and other types helps Gemini match content to queries.
  • Content structure. Answers in the first 30% of content, clear headings, and quotable 50-150 word segments are strongly favored.
  • Entity clarity. Consistent naming across your site, Schema, and third-party platforms improves entity recognition.
  • No separate crawler. Both features use Googlebot -- the same crawler that powers regular Google Search. Blocking Google-Extended does not affect AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Key Points

  • AI Overviews show AI summaries at the top of Google Search results; AI Mode offers a full conversational search interface
  • Both are powered by Google Gemini and draw from Google's search index via Googlebot
  • 88% of pages cited by AI Mode are not in Google's organic top 10 -- separate optimization is required
  • Blocking Google-Extended does not affect AI Overviews or AI Mode (only training)
  • Structured data, BLUF content structure, and entity consistency improve citation rates

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?

AI Overviews appear automatically at the top of regular Google Search results as a brief AI summary. AI Mode is a separate, opt-in conversational interface where users can ask follow-up questions. Both cite web sources and are powered by Gemini, but AI Mode is more interactive and generates more detailed, multi-turn responses. For optimization strategies covering both, see our Google AI Mode guide.

Can I prevent my site from appearing in AI Overviews?

Not without removing yourself from Google Search entirely. AI Overviews are considered part of Google Search and use Googlebot for content access. Blocking Googlebot would remove you from all search results. Blocking Google-Extended only affects AI training, not AI Overviews. Google currently does not offer a way to opt out of AI Overviews independently.

Do AI Overviews and AI Mode use different sources than regular Google Search?

Yes. While they draw from the same index, source selection is markedly different. Research shows 88% of AI Mode citations come from pages outside Google's organic top 10. These features prioritize structured data, clear definitions, direct answers, and entity consistency over traditional ranking signals like backlinks.
